Introduction to the Jumbo Salad Series

For the past couple of months, I have been particularly enamoured with a specific salad that is sold by a local supermarket chain (Jumbo) here in the Netherlands. It is the so-called "Jumbo Maaltijdsalade Gegrilde Kip 450g"

To love and be unloved

But there are many salads at my Jumbo, and so I thought it would be a fun series to write about all the different salads there.

The Review

It's an absolute delight. The salad mix is basically perfect (bar the red lettuce, which I am not so fond of). The chicken adds the right amount of unmami and the yogurt dressing gives a great bit of acidity to really balance the whole thing out.

It's also a very substantial lunch item as well. I eat it and find myself full for a good while, given some small time to initially digest. And I am a man of large appetite.

Also, it is their cheapest salad at €3.36 a pop. It inspires a bit of sentimentality, actually. This humble salad, so lowly considered, and yet it rises above the rest. Yes, it's still a bit expensive, but given other pre-prepared food options, I think it makes its argument well.

Now the egg is a bit of an odd addition, I will say. Odd not in terms of choice, but it feels "unnecessary", though it is welcome. It's like being given a dollar while watching a movie. It's a discordant thing, something that is just out of place.

Overall, I would give it a 4.5/5. My quibbles are minor, but present.
